The new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti which is based on the 14nm FinFET technology allows for further improvement to the already efficient Pascal architecture. With just a 75W TDP, it surpasses the previous generation in both performance and power draw.  Previously, I reviewed the ASUS Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and I was really happy with the performance. Today I have the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming which comes with an extra 6-pin connector which should allow for higher overclocking headroom. Let’s jump to the product unboxing right away.

Unboxing

The GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING box comes in a black and orange carton, with the iconic GIGABYTE G1 eye logo. Also on the box we have the highlighted features of the card such as RGB lighting and GIGABYTE’s WINDFORCE cooling technology.

At the back, we have details of the card and a short explanation of the GIGABYTE WINDFORCE 2X cooling system. The GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING also features GPU Gauntlet Sorting, where’s the GPUs are examined and tested for the highest power efficiency and lowest power consumption. Inside the box we have the GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING itself and a simple piece of documentation. I still remember the old days when graphics card used to be bundled with VGA adapters and extra PCIe cables.

Appearance

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-4

The GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING features an entirely plastic cooling shroud with orange strips. The card looks decidedly aggressive with its two large 90mm fans. The WINDFORCE X2 cooling system, features two pure copper heat-pipe with direct contact to the chip to deliver effective heat dissipation for higher performance.

The GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING comes with a backplate with the GIGABYTE branding and similar orange strips as seen on the shroud. If you noticed, the two screws at the right side actually secure the VRM heatsinks to keep the power delivery system cool.

As mentioned on the packaging, the GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING comes with RGB lighting which is located along the edge of the card. You can customize the lighting with the GIGABYTE XTREME ENGINE utility which you can download here.

An extra 6-pin PCIe connector is needed to supply extra juice when overclocking the card. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is rated at 75W TDP, and with the extra 6-pin connector, the GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING can draw up to 150 watts safely. With double the available power, power delivery shouldn’t be a limiting factor here.

You can hook up your display via the HDMI 2.0b ports which support a maximum resolution of 2160p at 60Hz, the single DisplayPort 1.4 or the DVI-D port. The GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING also supports NVIDIA G-Sync technology, which means you can pair it with a G-Sync monitor like the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q for fluid, tear-free gaming.

Test Machine

The GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING 4GB is tested on Pokde’s new and official bench rig for this review.  I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our sponsors who have supporting us since the early days of Pokde.net.

GIGABYTE XTREME ENGINE

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-24

The GIGABYTE XTREME ENGINE is the utility for managing GIGABYTE’s GPUs. The tool is pretty robust and user friendly with the loads of options segregated into the tabs. Overclocking and RGB lighting customization is easy with this utility.

Performance

During the test, I noticed that the peak system power consumption never goes above 213 watts. By subtracting the 120 W (± 10 W) that the rest of the hardware consumes, this card only sips approximately 93 watts (± 10 W). The card still sips very little power although it features an extra 6-pin PCIe connector. Now, let’s see the performance.

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-12

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-13

My experience with the ASUS Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is enough to convince that this card is subtle for eSport games title such as DOTA2 and CS: GO. Steady frame rates well above 100 fps at both 1080p and 1440p resolutions, this is an excellent card for eSports titles. Once again, the GTX 1050 Ti impresses me with its performance.

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-14

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-18

The GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING performs great in Battlefield 4. On the “Ultra” graphics preset, the game runs smoothly at 1080p resolution with an average of 77 fps. Playing the game at 1440p resolution is not really an option as frame rate drops below what I consider playable. But by turning off the Anti-Aliasing and some detail options, the game should be quite smooth with an average frame rate of over 60 fps.

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-15

In Overwatch, I set the graphics to the “Epic” preset and set the render scale to 100% and managed to get an average frame rates at 68 fps. I found it interesting that the card can drive the game pretty well at 1440p too.

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-16

Turning on the NVIDIA HairWorks in Witcher 3 is like a recipe for disaster. With an average frame rate of 28, the game is barely playable. But by turning off the HairWorks you will still be able to play the game, with the “console-like” frame rate. At this rate, it’s recommended to lower the details or just change to a lower resolution.

My observation during the review is that the GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING never hit above 66 Celsius and ran very quiet even at full load.

Overclocking

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-23

The extra juice supplied from the 6-pin PCIe is excellent. I managed to hit 8000Mhz on the memory clocks and 1644Mhz on the boost clocks, giving me an effective performance gain of around 11%. The overclock is successful and stable without any voltage increment to the GPU core. Just for fun, I played Overwatch for a few rounds and this is the result compared to the stock clocks.

gigabyte-gtx-1050-ti-g1-gaming-19

Not bad eh?

Conclusion

The 6-pin PCIe connector only delivered an extra of not more than 20 watts, but it allowed us to overclock the card higher than we could push the Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 Ti which didn’t come with a PCIe power connector. The GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING is a great card and it is also among the top few NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti cards. Once it’s a top-end card, the only issue with this card is the price.

Pokde-Silver

The GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING priced at around RM849 and it’s quite pricey. If you find that the price justifies the performance, then this is your card. For me the card would be golden if the price is right. I award the GIGABTYE GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI G1 GAMING with Silver Pokdeward.
