Proton CEO Teases Imminent Launch of EVs, Confirms Two Models Coming Soon

Proton’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Li Chunrong, has hinted at the imminent arrival of the company’s own-brand electric vehicles (EVs), set to debut “very soon.” This revelation aligns with earlier statements from Proton Chairman Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar during the launch of the S70 last November, indicating Proton’s commitment to meeting the Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (MITI) expectations.

In a recent address, Li Chunrong confirmed Proton’s plans to introduce not just one, but two EV models, with the second expected to follow six to eight months after the initial launch. However, specific details regarding the upcoming EVs remain undisclosed at this time.

Their venture into EVs is not entirely new, as the company previously unveiled an Iriz prototype over eight years ago. Despite this, a series production model did not materialize from the project. With the 2025 EV target for Proton and Perodua announced by Deputy MITI Minister Liew Chin Tong, speculation arises regarding the nature of their first EV within the purportedly tight timeline.

Potential avenues for Proton’s debut EV include the introduction of an all-electric version of an existing model or the adaptation of a vehicle from Geely’s existing lineup, given its partnership with the Chinese automotive giant. Geely’s Geometry series presents viable candidates, such as the A, C, E, and Panda models. Stay tuned for further updates as they gear up to electrify the automotive landscape.

Pokdepinion: I’m surprised they’re saying that it’s happening soon. I get wanting to create a buzz but I really felt like it would be a while longer before anything truly materializes. Guess I will find out sooner rather than later, and I can’t wait to see it myself.
