Canon Malaysia has officially launched the EOS R5 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera, which improves on the original EOS R5 with new sensors and focus tracking features that utilizes machine learning capabilities. (Surprisingly, the entire presentation avoided mentioning “AI” – though it’s not hard to see why given the concerns of such technology.)
Canon EOS R5 Mark II
The EOS R5 Mark II introduces a new 45-megapixel back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor and DIGIC Accelerator paired with the DIGIC X image processor, and the combination allows for faster data processing that enables faster capture speeds and response times. The camera is equipped with Dual Pixel Intelligent AF that further improves subject detection and tracking via machine learning, which makes it capable of tracking subjects under complex scenes where obstructions may occur.
For videographers, the EOS R5 Mark II supports 8K DCI 60p RAW video recording and a range of professional video features from Canon’s Cinema EOS system. Users can record 4K DCI 60p SRAW videos with two data streams (native + lower resolution proxy) for efficient editing – on paper, this should save the production time from doing a separate ingest and transcode process, which can be time-intensive.
The camera also features several machine learning technologies, including Neural Network Noise Reduction for reducing noise in high-ISO RAW images, along with in-camera upscaling that quadruples the effective resolution to 179MP right within the camera, and Canon says this workflow saves users time since no PC is needed to handle the upscaling work.
Additional features include a pre-recording mode, reduced rolling shutter distortion, and external recording up to 8K 30p via HDMI. The camera also incorporates a heat-dissipating structure to support longer recording times at higher resolutions, with the option to add batteries (with integrated 2.5GbE LAN) or external cooling fan module for extended sessions.
Now available in Malaysia, Canon is selling the EOS R5 Mark II for the price of RM18,499 (body only), while the kit price is RM23,699 which comes with Canon’s RF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens alongside the body itself.
Pokdepinion: I’m amazed by this keynote that it wasn’t a full-on AI hype fest, and it’s honestly a good thing.
