This Concept Smartphone Runs Entirely On AI, No Apps Required
The biggest week of the year in the smartphone world is upon us – in the 2024 rendition of MWC (Mobile World Congress), German telecommunications provider Deutsche Telekom (you may know them as T-Mobile in some regions) is expected to showcase a radical smartphone concept that will not feature apps in a traditional sense. Instead, it’s going to be entirely powered by AI.
The phone in question is named “T Phone” – not exactly a fancy name, but it’s got the generative AI courtesy of Brain.ai. The idea is that it’ll use an interface “where the AI predicts and generates the next interface contextually.” Aside from this concept, Deutsche Telekom will also be presenting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered smartphone with on-device AI capabilities.
While this sounds like a crazy idea that your phone will be entirely devoid of apps, the idea behind an AI-powered phone does have some merit to it. The company uses the example of traveling – in today’s world, such a process involves a complicated orchestra of travel, accommodation, and various apps to make a travel plan stick, but Deutsche Telekom’s idea is pretty straightforward: just let one AI figure out the process, no apps required.
Come to think of it, such an idea isn’t quite as radical as you may think. If you’ve ever used Siri or Google Assistant to complete basic tasks like setting an alarm, you already know this saves you time from accessing the app itself to set things up. Or as the company puts it, “like a concierge, the assistant understands your goals and takes care of the details.” Of course, this is merely a proof-of-concept for now – though you can’t rule out the possibility that this is where the industry is heading in the future.
Pokdepinion: I’m curious to know if such a concept would work in the future.
