Sony has just announced its latest display technology, which combines proprietary signal processing, individual RGB LED control, and high-density backlighting. While this isn’t OLED technology, Sony claims it can match or even surpass OLED in certain aspects, offering superior brightness and color accuracy.

Sony’s Independent RGB LED System

The key innovation here is Sony’s ability to control red, green, and blue LEDs independently, ensuring vibrant colors and accurate color reproduction even on larger panels. The precise backlight control enhances visual quality by improving light gradation and subtle hues, making movies with deep blacks and detailed lighting effects look spectacular.

Sony’s new RGB LED design covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color space and around 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 gamut. The display achieves a zonal peak brightness of over 4,000 cd/m², making it a powerhouse for HDR content.

Beyond sheer brightness, Sony’s advanced backlight control addresses common OLED issues, including over-brightened highlights, crushed blacks, and struggles with intermediate tones. This means better shadow details, improved color gradation, and enhanced contrast without the limitations seen in traditional OLED displays.

Sony collaborated with MediaTek for control processors, ROHM for LED drive ICs, and Sanan Optoelectronics for the LEDs. The company plans to integrate this new technology into consumer TVs and professional displays used for content creation. Mass production is expected to begin later this year, making this one of the most exciting display advancements in recent times.
