Enthusiasts sing praises for Samsung’s B-die, and for good reason. They clock high and are able to maintain low latencies at that. Not to mention Samsung B-dies enjoyed great success with the finicky 1st Gen AMD Ryzen processors, which made them even more desirable. But as Samsung is retiring their B-die memory chips, and kicking off with the newer A-die memory chips are looking like they will be much more affordable options.

How much cheaper? According to Tom’s Hardware, a 32GB stick of DDR4 2933 RAM featuring the Samsung A-die costs $157.77 (~RM658), as compared to another stick from Crucial with the same specifications which is priced at $171.99 (~RM717). The RAM specifications aren’t exactly great, clocked at 2933 MHz with CL21 timings. It runs at 1.2V, which is the nominal voltage for DDR4.

Samsung’s A-die is manufactured on the 10nm node, which is a huge step forward from the B-die’s 20nm manufacturing process. It seems to be the reason for the uninspiring timings though, but of course the Samsung M378A4G43AB2-CVF modules seem like they are intended for the value segment. Maybe after Samsung optimizes it, and OEMs start pumping in higher voltages to better binned products, will we start seeing better numbers?

Pokdepinion: Well, cheaper memory is always good, even if they aren’t exactly of the high performance variety.
