The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced updates to its certification standards, including new tiers for the ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black standards. Certified monitors meeting these new standards will be showcased at the CES 2025 in Las Vegas next week.

Updated VESA Standards

The ClearMR standard now includes three additional performance tiers – ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000 – designed to validate motion clarity in ultra-fast displays (think 480Hz or beyond). ClearMR is a standard introduced fairly recently in 2022, which uses the Clear Motion Ratio (CMR) metric to assess motion blur across certified displays.

For the DisplayHDR True Black standard, VESA has added a new DisplayHDR True Black 1000 tier on top of the existing ones that currently maxes out at True Black 600 standard. The numbers indicated in this standard denotes the peak brightness value in nits, and OLED panels has traditionally come with lower number but compensates though superior contrast performance. That said, OLED panels are split into a separate category (the True Black standard) from the standard tiers due to different panel characteristics.

Based on the testimonials, several display makers have prepared new monitors that meets the new specifications, including GIGABYTE, MSI, and LG. LG in particular mentions its recently-launched monitor, the UltraGear OLED 27GX790A, conforms to ClearMR 21000 standard with its 480Hz panel. One unnamed MSI QD-OLED monitor also meets the same standard. Meanwhile, Samsung Display (not to be confused with the brand’s consumer monitor division) also stated its intention to develop DisplayHDR True Black 1000-certified panels.

Pokdepinion: The future of monitors is certainly bright (pun intended).
