“The development of GDDR7 in March comes amid growing interest by global customers in the AI space in the DRAM product that meets both specialized performance for graphics processing and fast speed. The company said that it will start volume production in the third quarter,” SK Hynix said in a press release.

The new modules from the Korean manufacturer is rated at 32Gbps, though future iterations are expected to hit 40Gbps “depending on the circumstances.” The power efficiency is also improved by over 50% thanks to new packaging technology, which includes increasing the number of heat-dissipating substrates, while applying epoxy molding compound (EMC) that reduces the thermal resistance by 74% compared to previous-gen modules.

As far as consumer hardware goes, GDDR7 will most likely find its way first in NVIDIA’s upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs (codenamed Blackwell) with 28Gbps modules. However, this will only be reserved for higher-end models, if leaks are any indication.

Pokdepinion: It might take a full generation after NVIDIA until AMD and Intel adopts GDDR7 too.
