Most ransomware demands money from the victim’s system, often in cryptocurrency form; but this case is a rather unusual one. French-based corporation Schneider Electric was recently hit with a ransomware attack, but the demand was… baguettes of all things?
Schneider Electric Hit With Baguette Ransom
The hack was from a newly-established ransomware group called Hellcat, which claims to have breached the French company with 40GB of user data now in hostage. However, unlike your conventional ransomware attempts, Hellcat demanded the company to pay $125,000 (~RM549k) worth of baguettes. And it seems like they’re pretty serious about it, based on the ransom note below.
The company did confirm to BleepingComputer that it is investigating “a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to one of our internal project execution tracking platforms which is hosted within an isolated environment.” It further adds, “Our Global Incident Response team has been immediately mobilized to respond to the incident. Schneider Electric’s products and services remain unaffected.”
Per the publication, Schneider Electric was previously hit with another ransomware attack just earlier this year, with attackers claiming to have stolen terabytes of data.
Pokdepinion: If the hacking group wants to make themselves known, they sure did now.
