Discord is one of the most popular apps among gamers thanks to its robust chat and voice capabilities, but its feature-rich nature meant things can get bloaty pretty quickly. Amazingly, one developer ‘iProgramInCpp’ has somehow managed to fit this app into the 25-year-old Windows 98 SE operating system.

In fact, this is a modified version of the app with a period-accurate name: Discord Messenger. To make this work on old systems, certain features have been gutted out due to technical limitations – but overall, the interface is pretty familiar to the ones you’d see on the official version of the app. While the feature set is fairly barebones (just like IRCs back then), you can actually install this version right out of the box if you want to.

On its GitHub page, Discord Messenger is said to work on everything from Windows 2000 and above, though in a X/Twitter post, the developer has also demonstrated the same outcome on Windows 98 Second Edition. Compatibility is said to go as far back as Windows 95, but in such cases additional steps are required to make this work.
While you can technically grab the installation files and get it running, do note that Discord’s official terms prohibits the use of third-party clients – hence, using this modified version may get your account banned. That said, there’s very little reason to install this, especially you’d be missing out on many modern-day features that ultimately is the reason Discord is the top choice for many users today.
