The inevitable has happened: four years after Windows 11’s rather controversial launch, Microsoft’s latest operating system has finally overtaken Windows 10 as the most popular version among Windows systems (via StatCounter). This milestone is reached as the outgoing operating system is soon entering end-of-support status this coming October.

Windows 11 has a fairly slow adoption rate since its launch back in 2021. The primary reason of all is the stringent system requirements, with the TPM 2.0 requirement in particular eliminating many systems from upgrading at the time. Still, many PC upgrade cycles later, Windows 11 managed to slowly but surely gain its market share against a mostly Windows 10-dominated user base, which comprised of over 80% of Windows machines at the time its successor debuted.

With Windows 10 entering its final year of support, the transition process has somewhat accelerated, as Windows 11’s market share now stands at 52.19% (as opposed to Windows 10’s 44.48%). Expect this figure to be further accelerated in three months, though a small subset of Windows 10 users may be unwilling or unable to upgrade, of which they can opt for ESU (Extended Security Updates) to make sure their machines remain in active security support for another year.

While the upgrade seems mostly inevitable, Windows 11 isn’t exactly a well-received upgrade for some users. Primary complaints against it include mandatory Microsoft Account sign-in, heavy presence of service tie-ins and ads, along with controversial features such as Recall, and the overly aggressive push of its Copilot AI features.
