Windows 11 Catches Up To Android With QR Code Wi-Fi Sharing Feature
Accessing Wi-Fi networks with complex passwords for the first time can be a hassle, especially when you’re looking to piggyback on your friend or relative’s home Wi-Fi during your stay. Android has in fact introduced the QR code sharing feature which allows users to simply scan the QR code to get going – and it looks like Microsoft is looking into the idea with Windows 11 as well, according to Windows Latest.
In Windows 11 Insider build 25977, users can now generate a QR code with the credentials of the Wi-Fi network attached to it. Guests can scan the QR code as usual and will be immediately given access to the network without needing to manually enter the password. Microsoft confirmed that this feature will also work for mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.
The principle is virtually the same as Android’s Wi-Fi sharing feature, which lets the user scan the QR code and connects to the network itself. iOS meanwhile took a slightly different approach that involves just the password sharing, though manually selecting the SSID is still required to make that work.
It’s certainly a long time coming, given that finding Wi-Fi passwords in Windows machines prior to this involves a lot of digging through the menus. According to the outlet, it is understood that the feature may arrive in Windows 11 23H2 via cumulative or Moment update.
Pokdepinion: I’d imagine this is very convenient for mobile users – but what if one needs to share Wi-Fi between Windows devices? Perhaps Nearby Sharing could work in theory?
