HONOR claims its upcoming Magic9 Pro Max smartphone made an “unexpected” (read: pre-planned) trackside appearance at Sepang International Circuit, which hosted the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia race just last week, placing itself among a sea of professional cameras with huge lenses to capture the action.

HONOR Magic9 Pro Max Makes Another Public Appearance

No stranger to publicity stunts like towing a small plane, the Chinese smartphone maker claims the new smartphone “caught the attention of photographers on site.” It goes on and quote an unnamed photographer, who were “genuinely surprised” by the sharpness and detail of photos taken by this upcoming flagship.

Motorsport photography is technically challenging even among seasoned photographers, as racing cars often move around the circuit at extremely high speeds, demanding photographers to use large telephoto lenses and high-speed camera bodies capture the action. HONOR claims the Magic9 Pro Max can do all that, minus the bulkiness often associated with such setups.

The HONOR Magic9 Pro Max marks the 10th anniversary of HONOR’s Magic series and has been described by the company as the biggest upgrade in the lineup’s history. It is equipped with a dual 200MP “ARRI cinematic imaging system,” with an “emphasis on telephoto performance and high-speed capture,” which are central to how HONOR is positioning the smartphone against competing flagships.

While it has been launched in China, HONOR has not announced a Malaysia launch date for the Magic9 Pro Max just yet, but at this point we imagine it wouldn’t be too long until it gets revealed here. Until then, keep your eyes peeled.
