Square Enix has launched Final Fantasy Resonance, the first HD-2D title in the mainline Final Fantasy series, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and PC via Steam. The Steam version followed one day later, releasing on 23 October 2026. A free demo is available on all platforms, and save data carries over to the full game upon purchase.
Final Fantasy Resonance
Final Fantasy Resonance positions itself as a reimagining of the classic Final Fantasy experience through the HD-2D visual style, combining pixelized 3D models with dynamic camera angles to deliver a look that Square Enix describes as both nostalgic and contemporary. The game includes series staples such as airships, crystals, espers, and moogles woven into its narrative.
Combat follows a strategic turn-based structure where players exploit enemy weaknesses to trigger a stagger mechanic, breaking through enemy defenses to earn extra turns and unleash Resonance attacks during cinematic battle sequences. Party depth is built around Visions, which are echoes of iconic Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside the player and bring unique skills into battle.
Outside the main story, the game features substantial side content including the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum with monster battles and rewards, a Chamber of Arms housing powerful foes sealed within legendary weapons, and a confrontation with Ultima Weapon.
Editions & Bonus Content
The Digital Deluxe Edition bundles the base game with the Magitek and Grimoire Deluxe Pack, which includes the Magitek Armor Key (a cosmetic skin for the player’s chocobo), the Archwitch’s Grimoire (which unlocks a Fel Meteor Limit Burst for a specific character), and a set of starter consumables: Mastery Ring, Mist Potion x5, Tent x5, Mist Ether x5, Phoenix Down x5, and Remedy x3.
The Collector’s Edition is a physical release that includes the Standard Edition game alongside a specially designed goods box. The box contains an acrylic block set, a pixel art book, an original soundtrack CD featuring 120 tracks, and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promotional card.
Players who pre-ordered the game received the Magitek Airship and Squire Starter Pack, which transforms the airship into a magitek vessel and includes the Knight’s Greatsword, Chestplate of Preparation (which boosts EXP gained in battle), and a small set of consumables. A separate Squire Kickstart Pack provided the Blessed Cuirass armor piece, which increases gil earned in battle, alongside Mist Ether.
