U Mobile has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) to explore the deployment of 4G and 5G in-building coverage (IBC) at the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru, which serves as Malaysia’s terminus for the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System, better known as the RTS Link, scheduled to open in February 2027.
MRT Corp Brings U Mobile Onboard For ICQC Connectivity
The RTS Link is projected to serve approximately 40,000 passengers daily upon launch. As the primary transit point for cross-border commuters and visitors, the ICQC will handle high volumes of travelers who rely on mobile connectivity for journey information, onward transport coordination, and general communication. Besides that, the coverage needs to address the connectivity needs of around 600 government agency personnel from both countries stationed at the complex.
Under the agreement, U Mobile and MRT Corp will explore the commercial, technical, and operational framework needed to deploy 4G and 5G IBC throughout the ICQC. The arrangement would allow U Mobile to connect its network to MRT Corp’s existing IBC infrastructure, extending coverage across the facility – subject to a definitive agreement, technical requirements, and relevant regulatory approvals.
Beyond passenger connectivity, the 5G IBC deployment is intended to lay the groundwork for future AI-powered digital use cases within the complex. These could include smarter building operations, greater operational efficiency, and tools to improve the overall passenger experience at the gateway.
U Mobile CEO Wong Heang Tuck said: “The RTS Link represents a major step forward in strengthening cross-border mobility between Malaysia and Singapore, and reliable mobile connectivity will be an important part of the travel experience. Through this collaboration with MRT Corp, we aim to extend U Mobile’s 4G and 5G network coverage throughout the ICQC, helping government agency personnel, commuters and visitors stay connected at this important cross border gateways.”
Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, CEO of MRT Corp, said: “Our collaboration with U Mobile is part of a wider effort to bring the right expertise and services together to make that experience possible. Reliable mobile connectivity is an important part of modern travel, and we want it to be seamlessly integrated into the passenger journey.”
