Sony Unveils The a6700 Flagship APS-C Camera, Brings AI Processing From a7R V
The latest APS-C flagship from Sony comes in the form of the new a6700, which will succeed the now 4-years-old a6600 APS-C unit. This new model features a new backside-illuminated (BSI) Exmor R sensor with 26 megapixels; and the AI becomes the most prominent upgrade for Sony’s APS-C lineup. It’s also now capable of recording 4K at 120Hz – where the previous model only did 30.
Sony says it brought the AI processing unit from its full-frame a7R V camera which offers one of the fastest autofocus systems on the market. This new processor can pick up more subjects beyond human and animals, which now also includes bird, insect, vehicles, planes and more. Another AI enhancement comes from the auto-framing feature (commonly seen in webcams these days) which smoothly tracks the subject with no physical movement of the camera required.
The camera now also comes with USB-C – a big upgrade over the previous model featuring microUSB. The port is capable of 5Gbps transfers with its USB 3.2 standard, and USB-PD allows for fast charging.
Alongside the a6700’s announcement, Sony has also announced a new shotgun microphone ECM-M1 which supports up to 4-channel recording (with select cameras), which can be clipped directly onto a6700’s Multi Interface shoe to directly supply power and data without external cables. It however also comes with analog interface to pair with third-party cameras.
There’s also the FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II lens which Sony claims is the “world’s first zoom lens to offer half macro capability throughout the zoom range”. A teleconverter can be purchased separately to increase its focal length up to 400mm (equivalent to 600mm in APS-C models like a6700) and brings 1:1 magnification macro shooting. It’s new XD linear motor also improves autofocus speeds by 20% compared to previous model.
