As seen with their OnePlus Nord 4, it seems like they have changed their tune after responding to Google and Samsung’s announcement of seven years of software support for their flagship devices by stating that anything beyond five years wasn’t financially sensible.
OnePlus Nord 4: Extended Software Support
OnePlus COO Kinder Liu recently revealed to Digital Trends that the upcoming Nord 4 will receive six years of security patches from its launch. This additional year marks a significant shift from OnePlus’s earlier stance, raising questions about the company’s flagship devices like the OnePlus 12, which were initially promised five years of updates. It remains to be seen whether the extended support will apply to existing devices or just the forthcoming OnePlus 13.
The Nord 4 is set to receive four major Android updates, consistent with the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 12. Interestingly, this puts the Nord 4 ahead of its competitors, such as Samsung’s Galaxy A55 and A35, which are limited to five years of support. For consumers who prioritize longevity in software updates, the Nord 4 offers a clear advantage.
OnePlus is also breaking new ground with the Nord 4’s design, featuring a metal unibody construction—a rarity in today’s mobile market. This design choice is reminiscent of the beloved HTC One M series. According to Kinder Liu, the metal unibody was chosen for its “durability, beauty, permanence, and strength.”
The Nord 4’s design also addresses the challenge of 5G connectivity, which typically requires numerous antennas that can be impeded by metal. OnePlus has tackled this by making the antennas 50% smaller and strategically placing them to avoid signal interference. Additionally, plastic inserts are used in areas like the bottom of the back to ensure optimal signal reception.
The Nord 4 has been rigorously tested by TÜV SÜD, simulating 72 months of use. It is certified to remain as smooth and functional after this period as it was on day one, highlighting OnePlus’s commitment to long-term performance.
The OnePlus Nord 4 is set to become official on July 16. With its extended software support, innovative design, and durability, the Nord 4 is poised to make a significant impact in the mid-range smartphone market.
Pokdepinion: Any increase in support will always be a great move. If there was ever a decrease, I can’t imagine what sort of backlash the company will face.
