Samsung Mobile Division President TM Roh has confirmed that Bixby, Samsung’s virtual assistant, will receive a significant generative AI upgrade later this year. This enhancement will leverage Samsung’s own large language models, marking a notable step forward in the company’s AI capabilities.
Bixby’s Generative AI Transformation
Samsung’s decision to upgrade Bixby with generative AI will not involve partnerships with Google or OpenAI, at least initially. This move demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to developing its in-house AI technology.
TM Roh also emphasized that Samsung will continue to support multiple voice assistants on its devices. This means users can use it alongside Google’s Gemini, which will replace Google Assistant. Additionally, users can download the ChatGPT app, though it won’t be as deeply integrated into the OS as Samsung’s or Google’s native options.
While Samsung previously hinted at an AI-enhanced Bixby, the company had not provided a release timeline until now. Although Roh did not confirm specifics, it is speculated that the upgraded version could be launched alongside One UI 7, Samsung’s custom interface for the forthcoming Android 15.
