Samsung’s researchers has just made a breakthrough in the development of an improved quantum dot technology. The new findings will allow quantum dot displays to be improved by 21.4% while also extending their lifespan to a million hours.

Samsung new design involves using new structures to prevent the oxidation of the quantum dot core. They have also developed a shell around it to keep energy from leaking out in addition to shortening the ligand on the shell surface, contributing to the substantial increase in efficiency.

To develop the next generation of quantum dot displays, Samsung is investing $11 billion (~RM45.99 billion) over the next five years. The current crop of quantum dot displays do not produce their own light, instead serving to enhance the output of a the regular LED backlighting of an LCD panel. The latest development here today indicates that self-emissive quantum dots displays may be possible soon.
