AMD Ryzen Threadripper sports solder under its IHS; no next-gen TIM hanky panky here

AMD is known for using solder to ensure maximum thermal transfer from the CPU dies to the integrated heat spreader (IHS). The AMD Ryzen Threadripper sports indium solder for each of its four dies too, unlike Intel which seems to really enjoy cheaping out on TIM, even on their HEDT Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs.

The delidding is done by none other than der8auer. Aside from the unsurprising solder, the most shocking part is that there are four Ryzen dies in the Threadripper. That means that the Threadripper is an AMD EPYC CPU with two of the eight core dies disabled. We aren’t sure if we will be able to enable the disabled cores, like what was possible with the AMD Phenom II.

Regardless, we should be able to see 24-core and 32-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs if AMD decides to enable more dies in upcoming Threadripper CPUs, since the cores are already there anyway.

Pokdepinion: If the cores aren’t lasered away, and some motherboard manufacturer figures out a way to re-enable those cores, we will be getting 32-core CPUs for $999!
