Earlier this month, the Lenovo Legion Go S was revealed via a leak – and the information notes that it’ll be powered by a new AMD handheld-focused processor called Ryzen Z2 Go. Recently, leaker Golden Pig Upgrade has chimed in and reported that this chip will be exclusive to this handheld.

Ryzen Z2 Go Exclusivity

Before talking about Z2 Go specifically, let’s look at the alleged Ryzen Z2 lineup at large. First, you have the Z2 Extreme which is expected to power all the high-end gaming handhelds; this is based on AMD’s latest-and-greatest Zen 5 “Strix Point” architecture, found in Ryzen AI 300 series today. The mainstream option is the standard Ryzen Z2, which will be powered by “Hawk Point”, the mid-range counterpart of Strix Point processors.

Ryzen Z2 Go, meanwhile, will not technically be a new chip entirely, as it will be using older Zen3+ cores along with RDNA2 onboard graphics – both pointing to an architecture originated from Rembrandt (Ryzen 6000/7035 series), though its 4C/8T and 12CU configuration is entirely unique and is not derived from existing processors like Ryzen Z1 chips do. In the case of the exclusive device it’ll be powering, the chip is set to use LPDDR5X-6400 RAM, likely 16GB in capacity.

In Golden Pig Upgrade’s words, “Z2G’s full name is Ryzen Z2 Go, and it’s an exclusive CPU for (Lenovo) Legion Go S, positioned as an entry-level value-oriented model.” In fact, the leaker obtained screenshots from what looks like Lenovo’s own website containing marketing materials – though it’s rather odd that the RDNA2-based GPU is apparently going to be labeled as Radeon 800M graphics (the lineup of which is all RDNA3.5 at this point).

We’re only one week away from CES 2025 at this point, so we should be able to see the device and the chip in its full glory as AMD will be presenting its keynote at the event which kicks off next Monday (January 6, 2025).

Pokdepinion: If the price is right, this might be a solid competitor against Steam Deck.
