NVIDIA Turing GPUs may be in shortage soon as TSMC ceases production

NVIDIA may be looking at a shortage pretty soon as TSMC has just stopped production due to a chemical contamination. The contamination has apparently affected at least 10 000 wafers. With the production currently on hold to investigate the issues, supplies will be set back even further.

The contamination has reportedly affected the 12nm and 16nm wafers, which are used by NVIDIA for their GPUs, AMD for their current-gen console APUs as well as by HUAWEI for their older Kirin chipsets. It seems like TSMC’s newer 7nm process node isn’t affected, so AMD’s latest hardware like the Vega VII and Ryzen 3000 series should still be on track.

Whether this will affect supply of NVIDIA’s latest GeForce RTX cards will remain to be seen, but given that Jensen Huang has recently lamented the poor sales of the RTX cards, there should still be plenty to go around.
