If you need more evidence that AMD is doing very well, while Intel is going through a very rough patch – Mercury Research recently published its latest CPU shipment report that showed Team Red gaining a huge 10% share in the total CPU shipped just one year on.
AMD Upwards, Intel Downwards
This chart specifically reports on desktop CPU shipments – so laptops, servers and IoT devices do not count in this case. In Q3 last year, Intel is responsible for more than four-fifths of the CPUs shipped to customers, but that figure quickly dropped by the time we reach Q2 this year, where it lost 3.8% to AMD. Just one quarter later, an even bigger blow hits Intel, reducing its share to 71.3%, which is a net loss of 9.6% year-over-year.
One reason to Intel’s sudden loss of market share in just one quarter can likely be attributed to the core voltage bug that has affected most of the high-end 13th and 14th Gen Core i7/i9 processors, and it took the chipmaker several months to finally identify the microcode bug and patch it – but not without the fiasco already doing damage to the perception among the enthusiasts while its rival has enjoyed a relatively trouble-free year thus far.
That of course hasn’t accounted the impact of Core Ultra processors and AMD’s new mighty Ryzen 7 9800X3D (though the mainstream Ryzen 9000 is somewhat underwhelming performance-wise). There is a good chance that the scale may tip further towards AMD, especially as Intel is trying to solve its early teething issues that has been causing performance discrepancies and unexpected behaviors.
