Remember Athlon? The nameplate used to be AMD’s pride in its golden era, but the chipmaker has since repurposed the name for ultra-budget CPUs with basic functionalities. In the past few years, several Athlon chips were released over time in the Socket AM4 platform, but the nameplate has since been absent in the new Socket AM5 – but it won’t for long, according to sources.
AMD Revisits Athlon

According to Italian media outlet Bits and Chips, AMD is considering releasing one or two CPU models under Ryzen 3 or Athlon moniker to serve the budget CPU market. It is reported that the chipmaker will repurpose previous-gen chips, which saves cost and opens up the possibility to undercut Intel’s offerings.
Along with the release of the new Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, AMD will probably commercialize one or two Athlon/Ryzen 3 CPUs, in order to fulfill the lineup with economics products.
These CPUs will not have new Dies. They will rebrand low end Ryzen 7000 CPUs, produced on TSMC 7nm node. This will allow AMD to sell economic CPUs under $100 for the Socket AM5.
Bits and Chips (bitsandchips.it)
Since AMD’s rise to desktop CPU dominance in recent years, the chipmaker has rarely released low-end SKUs carrying the Ryzen 3 or Athlon name – it is theorized that since the yields were so good for its 8-core CCDs, there aren’t enough “defective” chips to be repurposed as Ryzen 3 or Athlon processors. Hence, this market segment has been largely served by Intel’s low-end Core i3 chips in recent years, making it especially popular among budget gamers.
If this report is accurate, we may see AMD silently introduce these models in the near future as it brings the Ryzen 9000 to the market, and potentially Ryzen 9000X3D later in the year. As a precaution, do take this report with a grain of salt.
