It looks like MSI is set to give its AMD 800 series motherboards a mid-cycle refresh, as a recent EEC filing (via Videocardz) saw the company listing several models with ‘MAX’ branding appended on them. This moniker was last seen in Intel’s 700 series motherboards in conjunction with 14th Gen Core’s launch.

Specifically, the models listed in this filing are as follows:

– PRO B850M-S MAX
– B850 GAMING PRO MAX WIFI6E
– B850M GAMING PRO MAX WIFI6E
– B850M GAMING MAX WIFI6E
– MPG X870M EDGE TI MAX WIFI
– MEG X870E ACE MAX
– MAG X870E GAMING MAX WIFI
– PRO X870E-S MAX WIFI
– MPG B850M EDGE TI MAX WIFI

Not only the MAX branding is coming to its premium and gaming motherboards, even the budget models are getting this treatment as well. Exactly what this refresh will bring is still up in the air, but for reference, the last time this branding appeared in AMD motherboards was the upgrade for BIOS SPI ROM to provide full AM4 range support (as the capacity limitation at one point prevented older AM4 motherboards from supporting Ryzen 5000 series CPUs).

Since then, the nature of mid-cycle refresh has changed a bit, which usually involves minor feature updates and cosmetic changes; in this case, we might see faster memory support given that AM5 has stagnated a bit when it comes to memory support, especially as the support for super-fast CUDIMM memory has been largely unclear at this time.
