If you’re a power user, there’s a good chance you have lots of extensions in your web browser right now – but if one of them is misbehaving, it can be fairly difficult to track down is the signs isn’t very clear. Microsoft is implementing a feature to highlight any offending extensions that can cause performance issues, and lets users to decide to turn if off as needed.

Microsoft Edge Flags Misbehaving Extensions

The way most extensions work is by injecting lines of code into webpages, but some can be more demanding than others, which may cause slowdowns in slower systems. “Microsoft Edge can now detect when these delays become noticeable and persistent,” the company wrote in its blog post.

The feature is called extension performance detector, which alerts the user if the extensions “persistently impact” the browsing experience. (In its post, Microsoft has repeatedly stressed the word “persistent”, and has noted that most extension users won’t be seeing this alert very often.)

You can enable this feature right now if you have Edge Canary 130 – simply enter the line below into address bar, select Enable, and restart the browser:

Microsoft has worked on several features focusing on browser performance, notably with the addition of RAM limiter earlier this year, as it hopes to compete with Google’s Chrome browser. Speaking of extensions, Google is currently in the process of phasing out Manifest V2 in place of its V3 successor, which will significantly impact the efficacy of adblockers.
