Microsoft Edge Is Allowing Users To Control How Much RAM It Uses

If you open enough tabs, even the most efficient web browsers can end up being resource hogs. Many browser makers come up with different ways of limiting RAM usage, including putting tabs to “sleep”, more efficient memory management, or sometimes just leaving it for the users to decide. That’s exactly what Opera GX did – and Microsoft Edge is taking that idea for its browser as well.

As spotted by @Leopeva64 on X (Twitter), Edge will contain a section dedicated to memory management settings, where users can control the behavior of RAM limiter. Furthermore, the setting can be enabled only when a gaming session is active, or the user can keep it always on if the system’s memory is relatively insufficient. The screenshot also shows the adjustable limits of RAM allocation, which go as low as 1GB (though it’s not recommended) and as high as 16GB.

The feature is currently available on the Canary version of Edge, which means it’ll take a while before the feature officially ships to all users. In any case, the feature should give Microsoft’s browser an edge (no pun intended) over its competition – particularly, Google Chrome (although it’d be great if the company can stop nagging at Chrome users about making the switch at every chance it gets).

Pokdepinion: Feature-wise, Edge is looking pretty solid these days. I just wish Microsoft wasn’t being so annoying about it.
