Spotify recently announced a new feature that would be very useful in case the internet connection is lost (or having the servers knocked offline, which coincidentally happened just before the announcement), and it’s called ‘Offline Backup’.

Soon available to Premium subscribers, Offline Backup leverages the data already downloaded on your phone when streaming online (which is a local, temporary copy of the file called ‘cache’), and if the connection is lost or the server is unreachable, the feature can simply grab whatever remains on the device and reconstruct a playlist on your Home feed.

This feature differs from traditional offline downloads, where it has to be initiated by the user; meaning, Offline Backup, on paper, is not going to take noticeably more storage space than what it already uses at this point. Conveniently, this also means if you ever forgot to download a song to your device, you can still get to listen to it offline as long as you have done so recently while the app was connected to the Internet.

You’ll have to manually enable this feature through the app settings. Simply head to Settings > Data Saving and Offline (or Storage) > toggle Offline Listening. Users can also add the Offline Backup to Your Library section for easy access. The update will be available all Spotify users on Android, iOS, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, with rollout beginning next week.
