TikTok’s achievement of surpassing $10 billion in in-app spending is nothing short of historic. The app accomplished this feat through an innovative system that enables users to tip their favorite creators and live streamers. Market researchers lauded ByteDance-owned TikTok for seemingly “unlocking the secret to monetization on mobile.”

Contrary to previous years, app spending in 2023 saw a notable shift. While spending on games experienced a 2% decline on a yearly basis, spending within apps witnessed a significant uptick. Users were willing to pay more for streaming services, user-generated content platforms, and dating apps. However, the primary revenue driver in the mobile landscape remained advertising, constituting two-thirds of mobile sales and reaching an impressive $362 billion, an 8% increase from 2022.

The analysis also shed light on changing user behavior, with consumers spending more time on their smartphones. Indonesia emerged as the leader in this aspect, boasting an average of over 6 hours of daily app usage per person. Among the top 10 markets, the daily app usage average hit 5 hours, accompanied by a 3% increase in spending.

Shein and Temu took the lead as the most downloaded apps, with Temu claiming the top spot in 125 markets. Interestingly, the travel and ticketing sectors experienced a rebound in popularity and spending. Notably, generative AI apps also made waves, surpassing $10 billion in monthly consumer spending by late 2023.
