In probably is one of the last few reminders before Windows 10 is left to its own devices, Microsoft has been spotted recently sending emails to users to remind the operating system’s impending end-of-life status come October 14 this year. Unsurprisingly, the gist of the email is to remind users to upgrade to Windows 11 – even if that means buying a new PC.

Microsoft Wants You To Upgrade

The email starts with a clear message: “End of support for Windows 10 is approaching”, and Microsoft explained that the operating system, soon reaching 10 years of age, will no longer be eligible for security updates beyond October 14, 2025. Conveniently, Microsoft made zero mentions of ESU (Extended Security Updates) in this email, which extends the eligibility of security updates to October 2026.

Now, one major factor in Windows 11’s limited uptake is the TPM 2.0 requirement, which restricted most PCs made before 2017 from officially upgrading. That’s still a lot of machines that will forever stay in Windows 10, but Microsoft simply advised users to just “trade it in or recycle it with local organizations”. It really doesn’t look like the Redmond-based software giant is properly applying the principle of 3Rs, where the third one (Recycle) should be the last.

With billions of PCs running Windows today – almost 60% of them still running Windows 10 – there will a good chunk of them prematurely scrapped in organizations, which may cause a significant e-waste issue. The huge userbase also meant hackers will likely exploit the lack of security support to steal sensitive information, so if you want a peace of mind, upgrading is the only way to go (or if you’re hardcore, go Linux).
