U Mobile announced its ULTRA5G network has reached 90% 5G Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) nationwide, fulfilling a commitment originally set for July 2027 more than nine months ahead of schedule. The milestone was announced at an event officiated by Minister of Communications YB Dato’ Seri Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Minister of Communications YB Teo Nie Ching.

U Mobile Completes Both Coverage Commitments Ahead of Deadline

The achievement follows U Mobile reaching more than 80% coverage in March 2026, which itself came less than nine months after the rollout began and over three months ahead of its original July 2026 deadline. U Mobile began deploying its network in July 2025 under two commitments: 80% CoPA within the first 12 months, followed by 90% CoPA by July 2027. With both targets now met early, the company says it has fulfilled the nationwide coverage obligations tied to its role in Malaysia’s Dual 5G Network Model.

Wong Heang Tuck, Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile, said: “Achieving 90% nationwide 5G coverage more than nine months ahead of schedule reflects the determination of the entire U Mobile team and the strong collaboration of our government, regulatory, technology and infrastructure partners. We made a commitment to build a nationwide 5G network at speed and scale, and today, we are proud to have delivered on that promise ahead of schedule.”

“This milestone is more than just about reaching a coverage target. It is about bringing quality digital connectivity closer to more Malaysians and creating a stronger foundation for how people learn, work, communicate and access opportunities. With the nationwide network foundation now in place, our focus is to continue strengthening the ULTRA5G experience and helping businesses, communities and public services translate connectivity into meaningful value,” Wong added.

U Mobile’s rollout has been accompanied by several industry recognitions in 2026, including being named Malaysia’s Best Mobile Network and Fastest 5G Network by Ookla, and recognition from Opensignal for improvements in reliability, network quality, speed, and 5G experience. Earlier in the year, the Malaysia Book of Records recognized U Mobile for the Fastest 5G Network Rollout in Malaysia, following its achievement of over 80% CoPA in under nine months.

Following the completion of its first-year in-building coverage (IBC) commitment, U Mobile has surpassed 250 IBC sites nationwide, aimed at improving indoor connectivity. The company said it will continue expanding its in-building footprint while advancing initiatives involving 5G-Advanced and AI-enabled solutions to support organizations and Malaysia’s broader digital transformation efforts.

Pokdepinion: Beating your own deadline ahead of time is rare in telco rollouts, so good job for that.
