Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, took to X, previously known as Twitter, to announce Perodua’s pivotal role in producing affordable electric vehicles (EVs) as part of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP).

New Perodua EV Arriving End of 2025

Perodua has been selected as the lead car brand for this initiative, aiming to roll out affordable EVs by 2025. The company’s commitment to this timeline was reaffirmed after discussions between Minister Tengku Zafrul and senior Perodua executives, including President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

In collaboration with an undisclosed international car partner, there is an active development of prototype Perodua EVs. This move aligns with the impending expiration of the RM100,000 price cap for imported completely built-up (CBU) EVs under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (Miti) Franchise AP policy.

Previously, Perodua teased the Electric Motion Online (EMO) concept at the Malaysia Auto Show 2023, showcasing a Myvi-sized Perodua EV equipped with a 50kWh battery offering a range of 350 km on a single charge.

However, the absence of Proton in the EV conversation raises questions about its role in Malaysia’s EV landscape. Will Perodua remain the primary affordable EV manufacturer under NIMP 2030, positioning Proton as a premium alternative? Or will Proton join the fray at a later stage? As the nation moves towards a greener automotive future, these developments will undoubtedly shape the local EV market dynamics.

Pokdepinion: I’m hoping this Perodua EV will at least be the size of a Myvi and not anything smaller. A little taller like the Ativa would be nice too, competing against the likes of the ATTO 3.
