Sony has announced two new G Master super-telephoto prime lenses for its Alpha full-frame E-mount system: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. Both lenses are claimed by Sony as the world’s lightest in their respective focal length categories, weighing approximately 994g and 995g respectively, along with optimized weight balance to improve handling during handheld shooting.
Sony FE 400mm & FE 600mm G Master Lenses
The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS measures approximately 108mm in maximum diameter and 242mm in length, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS is slightly longer, at 263mm. Both lenses feature a weight balance designed to shift the center of gravity closer to the camera body to make it easier to maintain framing, track moving subjects and perform panning shots. Sony said the compact, lightweight design is particularly suited to handheld shooting in environments where using a tripod or monopod may be impractical, as well as during extended shooting sessions.
Both lenses feature three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element to suppress chromatic and other optical aberrations common at super-telephoto focal lengths, delivering resolution across the image from center to edge. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II is also included to reduce ghosting and flare in backlit conditions. An 11-blade circular aperture, combined with optimization of spherical aberration during both design and manufacturing, is intended to produce the smooth bokeh characteristic of the G Master lens series.
For autofocus, they both use two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors paired with a control algorithm optimized for each lens to deliver fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance suited to tracking fast-moving subjects such as birds, wildlife and sports. Both lenses are compatible with the Alpha 9 III’s continuous shooting mode at up to 120fps with AF/AE tracking. You’ll also find four customizable focus hold buttons positioned around the lens barrel, along with a function ring, focus range limiter, Full-time DMF switch, focus mode switch and image stabilization mode switch.
Built-in optical image stabilization (OIS) helps reduce camera shake during handheld shooting at super-telephoto focal lengths. The lenses also support the camera body’s Active Mode stabilization and coordinated image stabilization control, along with breathing compensation to correct shifts in angle of view caused by focus changes during video recording.
When paired with Sony’s optional teleconverters, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS can reach focal lengths of up to 800mm, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS can reach up to 1200mm. Both lenses feature a dust and moisture-resistant design, along with a fluorine coating on the front element for protection against contaminants during outdoor use.
Both lenses will be available from late September 2026, with the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS priced at RM11,399 and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS priced at RM15,999.
