The next generation gaming handheld processor in the form of AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme has been discovered in a shipment manifest, though the chipmaker has already confirmed the chip’s existence in Gamescom earlier this year.
Ryzen Z2 Extreme Spotted
The entry discovered listed the goods as ‘Z2X28W’ – from this string of text we can decipher two piece of information: one, ‘Z2X’ indicates that this is a Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip; two, the ’28W’ indicates that this should be a 28-watt chip, in line with most gaming handhelds. The entry also lists other information, such as using the FP8 socket and 64-bit memory, and more importantly, it’ll be an 8-core chip.
Videocardz also reports that the OPN code traced back to the AMD’s Product Master list noted that the chip is currently in mass production, which is in line with the chipmaker’s claims that it will be launching in early 2025. It’s unclear how powerful the onboard GPU will be, but it’s not unreasonable for AMD to put all 16 of the Compute Units available in its Radeon 890M found in the top-tier Ryzen AI 300 processors. Should this be true, the chip should be more than capable of playing AAA games at decent settings.
We should be able to see more leaks down the line as time goes on, but it won’t be surprising to see the new Ryzen Z2 series making its debut on CES 2025 along with a new lineup of gaming handhelds, such as the successors of Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally.
Pokdepinion: 8 cores is still reasonable for gaming, so I don’t think this will be an issue.
