Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X-series chipsets have been making waves in the tech world, and the latest leak from Evan Blass gives us a closer look at an upcoming addition to the lineup. The Snapdragon X-series includes two primary versions: the X Plus, which typically features a 10-core Oryon CPU, and the X Elite, which comes with 12-core configurations. However, a new 8-core version of the Snapdragon X Plus is set to launch soon, specifically designed for laptops.

According to the leak, the new 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chipset will be showcased at IFA Berlin and will power CoPilot+ notebooks starting at a price point of $800. This version is a slightly scaled-down variant of the standard X Plus chip, featuring an 8-core Oryon CPU.

In terms of performance, the 8-core X Plus chip is expected to offer a 3.4GHz single-core boost and a 3.2GHz multi-core boost, providing solid computing power for everyday tasks. However, this version comes with some reductions compared to its 10-core counterpart. The new chip will have a reduced Adreno GPU, capable of 1.7 TFLOPS instead of the 3.8 TFLOPS found in the standard X Plus. Additionally, it will include LPDDR5X RAM with a total cache of 30MB, compared to the 42MB cache in the 10-core version.

The 8-core Snapdragon X Plus will support up to three external monitors at UHD resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, which is a step down from the 4K 120Hz support available on higher-end models. Despite these cutbacks, the chipset retains several key features, including the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU with 45 TOPS, Always-Sensing ISP, Wi-Fi 7, and 5G support.

Pokdepinion: I’m still not too sure how to feel about these chips for laptops. I’d be very excited to try it still to see how it compares to the usual Intel and AMD offerings but I’m also not expecting much out of it, aside from efficiency maybe.
