The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X from AMD has a bit of a power problem – some argued that the power limited is too low, which hurt their multi-core performance. Earlier, reports indicate that AMD will soon increase the official TDP limits of these chips, but it didn’t take long for motherboard makers to step in first.
MSI’s Solution

MSI motherboards, as spotted by @kuroberumo on X (Twitter), has since included a new feature that increases the power limit of 9600X and 9700X to 105W, giving them more power headroom to work with. That does translates to improved performance, as the tweet claimed that the 8-core Ryzen 7 9700X has gained 13% in Cinebench R23 by increasing the TDP. However, the improvement against its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7700X, was not quoted.
However, just as reported earlier, AMD reportedly plans to do this officially via the upcoming AGESA update, so all motherboards moving forward will see the 6-core and 8-core chip getting this extra option. As Wccftech reports, this will be added sometime between September and October. This update, coupled with the upcoming Windows update that improves on branch predictions capabilities, should help AMD’s Zen 5 lineup get more competitive amidst largely mixed reviews.
