Pretty much every single laptop you can find today comes with 8GB or 16GB of RAM, or 32GB for the high-end ones. By the off chance that you see non-standard configurations like 24GB (like some ASUS laptops), it’s usually a combination of soldered RAM plus a SO-DIMM slot that provides 8+16GB of memory respectively.

However, this HONOR MagicBook 16 AI laptop isn’t that – based on the photo taken with the Task Manager shown on screen, this particular machine has 24GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM that is entirely soldered onto the motherboard across 8 individual DRAM chips (note the ‘Row of chips’ label). The laptop, powered by Intel’s new Core Ultra 5 125H, has also found its way into the Geekbench database which also registers 24GB of RAM.

The reason that such memory configuration exists is due to the new non-binary DRAM, which has recently found its way into desktops in the form of 24GB and 48GB DDR5 modules. The DRAM chips in question are 3GB (24Gb) chips, which is different than the 2GB (16Gb) chips commonly found in most DRAM applications, including GPUs.

So far, this laptop is set to be available first in China – while there are no signs that a global release is imminent, Malaysia is one of the markets where HONOR’s laptops are sold, meaning the next iteration of the model may come with this memory configuration.

Notably, Crucial has recently released 12GB DDR5 SO-DIMM modules that could mean more laptops utilizing 24GB memory configuration in the future, especially as AI features may demand an increase in total system memory.
