Olympics is back after 3 years (remember, Tokyo 2020 was delayed due to Covid) which brings the world’s athletes to Paris, France. For this Olympics, Samsung announced it is providing over 200 of its flagship Galaxy S24 Ultras for the event’s opening ceremony to be held on July 27, 2024.

Setting up the infrastructure to handle 200-plus smartphones streaming at the same time for a global event is as complicated as you’d imagine – because Paris Olympics will not be hosting its opening ceremony within the confines of a stadium (this is the first ever opening ceremony held outside of the stadium), Samsung has partnered with France’s telecommunications provider Orange provide a dedicated 5G network to make this work, and that involves installing “more than a dozen” 5G antennas and a chase boat with relay towers onboard to bridge the signals.

These Galaxy S24 Ultras will be attached to the bow and sides of 85 athlete vessels to function as onboard cameras, which provides viewers a look at the Seine River and 10,500 athletes onboard during the ceremony. The same technology will be used in the main event’s sailing category in Marseille, where each competing boat will have the smartphone onboard to provide a close up view of the race. I imagine this will be looking somewhat similar to Formula 1’s onboard cameras, but we’ll have to wait for the company to provide more technical details as the event approaches.

Of course, you might think that the camera technology has probably got this sorted long before – we have GoPros and all kinds of onboard broadcast cameras on this day and age, after all. Samsung is naturally trying to advertise its latest flagship by bringing it to the biggest sports event in the world, and should it prove to be successful, this may end up being a big marketing win for the Korean smartphone giant.

Pokdepinion: It’s a big marketing stunt to advertise the Galaxy S24 Ultra – I’d be impressed if they pull this off.
