Apple A16 Bionic Supposedly To Include Ray Tracing But Scrapped Due To Power Issues

According to reports from Taiwan, Apple is expecting a 35% improvement in power efficiency from its latest A17 Bionic chipset, which is reportedly built on TSMC’s 3nm FinFet technology process. This will be a key feature driving “replacement demand” among iPhone users, along with the new camera and USB-C charging port.

As reported by DigiTimes, Apple has bought the entire first production run of TSMC’s 3nm chips, making it the only smartphone company with access to such a semiconductor in 2023. Meanwhile, Qualcomm and MediaTek have decided not to develop their own solutions for now, with MediaTek citing “high production costs” and Qualcomm holding back to assess the situation.

Samsung is already investing heavily in its 3nm process technology, and the company has stated that it will continue to develop it without sacrificing legacy 130-65 nm nodes.

The A17 Bionic chipset is expected to be used in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which will also feature a refreshed design, periscope camera, and solid-state volume and power buttons. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are likely to stick to the A16 Bionic, but they will also receive the USB-C treatment after the European Union effectively pushed Apple to ditch the Lighting port.

The power efficiency improvement of the Apple A17 Bionic chipset will provide significant benefits to iPhone users, making the device run smoother and longer on a single charge. This innovation is a game-changer for Apple, further cementing its dominance in the smartphone market. Stay tuned for more updates on Apple’s latest technology advancements.
