Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ announced — to debut in the ROG Phone 2?

Qualcomm is no stranger to releasing refreshed versions of their flagship chipset in the middle of their life cycle. The Snapdragon 821 is one example, while the Snapdragon 845 saw an overclocked version pop out of nowhere and power the original ROG Phone. The ROG Phone 2 may very well be powered by an overclocked Snapdragon 855 too, with the Snapdragon 855+ just announced today.

The Snapdragon 855+ is just that, an overclocked Snapdragon 855. Instead of just the CPU cluster being overclocked like the case with the first ROG Phone 2, the new chipset will have an overclocked CPU and GPU.

The overclocked CPU is expected to offer 4.2% better single-threaded performance, while the GPU overclock will deliver 15% higher graphics performance. Last year, ASUS was the only one we saw to offer the overclocked Snapdragon 845, but maybe this time we might see more vendors pick up the newer chip over the Snapdragon 855.

Usually overclocked processors will consume more power, but given the ROG Phone 2 is rumored to tout a 6000 mAh battery, I have zero doubts about its longevity. We are a bit more than a week away from the ROG Phone 2’s launch in China, so stay tuned!
