If you know a thing or two about modern-day Sony Xperia smartphones, they’re known for the cinematic 21:9 displays that made the phone especially slim in proportions (though that’s no longer the case with Xperia 1 VI reverting to a more conventional 19.5:9 ratio). However, there was one prototype dating back to 2019 that features an even taller shape, and you now have the chance to buy this piece of smartphone history.

Sony’s Ultra-Tall Xperia Resurfaces

The nature of this unit is a prototype intended to showcase the then-new 5G mmWave technology in smartphones, and as Reddit users spotted, it’s now on sale on a Ukrainian marketplace for 9,999 Ukrainian Hryvnias (roughly RM1,067). Given that Xperias were already tall at the time, having an extra tall chin on top of that made the phone’s proportions especially tall, which most likely will cause some ergonomic issues in normal usage.

The seller listed the specs of the unit, and it certainly is period-correct: we’re talking Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB RAM, 128GB onboard storage, 12+12MP dual rear camera, 4,500mAh battery, along with the discrete 5G modem in the form of Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem that enabled 5G mmWave functionality for the smartphone. In case you didn’t know, mmWave (millimeter wave) is the fastest version of the 5G technology capable of delivering multi-gigabit speeds.

Still, prototypes by nature are not always guaranteed to work by design, so proceed at your own discretion if you want to purchase this unique piece of gadget. All things considered, it certainly will attract eyeballs when you pull out one of these out of your pocket (assuming your pocket is deep enough to fit it).
