Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has announced its latest flagship smartphone in collaboration with Leica, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. Naturally, camera is among the standout feature of this device. Xiaomi says the company took inspiration from Leica’s compact M series cameras with its design.

Under the lenses, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra packs a quad-camera array that prominently features the 1-inch Sony IMX989 50MP sensor, with three IMX858 sensors taking the ultrawide (12mm), telephoto (75mm) and super-telephoto (120mm) duties. The main sensor also comes with a new mechanical dual-aperture system that switches between f/1.9 and f/4.0 – a feature that was first debuted in Samsung Galaxy S9, however it only survived one more succeeding generation before getting scrapped altogether.

The specs elsewhere is no slouch either: the 6.73-inch WQHD+ display provides up to 2,600 nits of brightness, and comes pre-calibrated with the new CIE 2015 colorimetry to provide consistent color reproduction across various Xiaomi devices. Performance is courtesy of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, with 12GB of LPDDR5X and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage available on tap (this will be the only configuration available locally).

All of these specs does come at a cost – not just price – but rather weight. It tips the scales at a rather heavy 227 grams, though Xiaomi has given the flagship unibody metal frame to enhance durability, and add a layer of leather texture finish on top similar to Leica’s M series cameras. Pricing is set on RM5,199, with two colors – Black and Olive Green, available for purchase in authorized Xiaomi stores and retailers nationwide.

Pokdepinion: Very cutting edge hardware I’m seeing here, but I hope weight reduction can be introduced at some point. Phones can’t keep getting heavier right?
