Sony And RTS Announces Acquisition Of Evo Brand – Schedules Evo Online 2021 for August

Sony Interactive Entertainment has just announced that they have acquired the famous fighting tournament brand Evo and was made together with new esports venture, RTS. The new esports venture has experience with the esports field including esports event management, brand and developer consulting and gaming talent management. RTS also features investors that include Endeavor, a global entertainment, sports and content company.

According to a statement made by Sony and RTS, co-founders of Evo, Tom and Tony Cannon will play advisory roles and will remain closely involved to “ensure Evo continues to service the fighting game community and support its vibrant growth”.

Sony and RTS also announced that the famed fighting tournament will be back with Evo Online 2021 after missing out 2020 due to the global pandemic. Evo Online 2021 will be a fully online tournament and will commence from 6 August to 8 August as well as 13 August to 15 August.

Games such as Tekken 7, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and Guilty Gear -Strive- will be available for players in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America to compete in. Online qualifiers will be streamed LIVE online. More details on this will be revealed in the coming weeks through the Evo website. Entries for Evo Online 2021 is completely free.

Sony assured fans that they are committed to preserving the essence of Evo for the fighting game community. Despite their acquisition, the beloved brand “will remain what it has always been: an open-format competition that gives fighting game fans from different countries a chance to connect, test their skills, and forge new friendships”.

Pokdepinion: Well this came out of nowhere. Looks like a good place for Sony to tap directly into that lucrative esports market.
