[CES2019] Intel 10nm Ice Lake processors are coming — will come together with a serious >1TFLOP GPU!

Intel’s 10nm process is a pretty rocky path for Intel. Intel had some serious difficulties trying to get 10nm production up, and last year they only managed to push out some low end Intel Core i3 chips based on the 10nm process. Meanwhile, their other processors are still manufactured on an optimized 14nm++ process node. The wait will soon end for enthusiasts who are dying to get a worthy upgrade to their processors though.

Intel’s Ice Lake will be the first volume 10nm processor, and will be arriving on mobile PCs first. In case you missed it, Intel will be separating their core architecture from their processor architecture naming scheme. So these Ice Lake processors will feature Sunny Cove core microarchitecture.

These new Ice Lake processors will also be the first to feature the new Gen11 iGPU which will support Intel Adaptive Sync, and is claimed to offer above 1 TFLOP of performance. AMD’s Ryzen 5 2500U’s deliver 1.126 TFLOPS and games are already quite playable on that little APU, so if it comes close to that, we would consider that Intel has made huge progress.

Aside from our usual performance parameters, the new Ice Lake processors will come with new DL Boost instruction sets for AI workloads. It will also be the first to integrate Thunderbolt 3 and WiFi 6, so you can expect some serious connectivity with laptops powered by Ice Lake processors.

The only problem is that you will have to wait until holiday 2019, which is still a long way to go from now. Well, more time for AMD to widen the gap, yes?
