GIGABYTE silently releases GIGABYTE 990FX Gaming with USB 3.1 and M.2 slot

It seems that not only AMD has silently introduced new AMD FX 6330 processor; GIGABYTE has taken a step forward too and silently spawned a new motherboard for AMD AM3+ processor. The main highlights of the GIGABYTE 990FX Gaming motherboard is USB 3.1 and M.2 support that will bring AMD platforms up to speed in terms of storage options and connectivity.

The GIGABYTE 990FX Gaming motherboard is offering some new features that can be said to be non-existent in any other AMD FX motherboard currently in the market. As I said above, this board comes with USB 3.1 with Type-C connector that offers 10Gbs transfer speeds while the M.2 is using PCIe 2.0 lanes to offer up to 20Gbs transfer speed unlike their counterpart Intel’s Skylake Z170 platform that uses PCIe 3.0 lanes. Even with only PCIe 2.0 lanes it will still offer faster speeds compared to SATA 3.0 SSDs.

The GIGABYTE 990FX Gaming motherboard also received heavy audio upgrade with a TI Burr Brown OPA2134 operational amplifier and Rivet Networks Killer E2201 LAN chip. It also supports both AMD Crossfire and NVIDIA SLI technology on two PCIe X 16 slots which run at full X16 speed.

Pokdepinion: From my perspective it seems like GIGABYTE still sees a market in high-end AM3+ boards. But I believe the main purpose of this new motherboard is is to give us some insight on what we could expect in the upcoming AMD AM4 platform in 2016.
