Huawei and Leica announces new joint innovation lab
The Huawei P9 is not the end of the Huawei x Leica partnership. With the latest announcement, Huawei and Leica Camera AG expands their strategic collaboration with the establishment of a jointly operated research and innovation center, the “Max Berek Innovation Lab”. This comes five months after the launch of the hugely successful Huawei P9 and P9 Plus which redefined mobile photography with an innovative RGB + monochrome dual camera system.
The new lab is located at Leica’s global HQ in Wetzlar, Germany, and will work on further development of optical systems and software-based technologies to improve imaging quality in a wide range of photographic and mobile device application. The Max Berek Innovation Lab allows Huawei and Leica to unite their extensive expertise and resources in their respective fields to pioneer truly game-changing technologies.
The research and innovation center in named in rememberance of Max Berek who created the first Leica lenses and was also responsible for the optical design of more than 20 lens for the legendary 35mm cameras invented and built by Oskar Barnack. With the great optical performance of the lens and Barnack’s ingenious construction of the camera bodies, Leica achieved worldwide success in 35mm photography.
Pokdepinion: With the upcoming Huawei Mate 9 to feature a yet improved dual-camera design, we can’t wait to see what this partnership between Huawei and Leica will bear for their upcoming flagships.
