Despite almost a year since Ryzen 9000’s official launch, we haven’t heard much on the G-series models thus far, which is designed for those who needs reasonable amounts of graphics horsepower while not requiring a discrete GPU. It turns out the Ryzen 9000G is still happening, albeit with a major caveat: it won’t be based on Zen 5.

This information originated from Chiphell, a leaker of which stated that Zen 5-based desktop APU will have to wait for another generation. This claim was meant as a reply to another user, who assumed that the hypothetical “Ryzen 7 9700G” would’ve used the same design as the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370’s 4C+8c core layout, along with its Radeon 890M graphics. That assumption would’ve been fair, since this is what Ryzen G-series chips have been in the past few generations.

So what would the eventual Ryzen 9000G series look like? The leaker says it’ll simply be a refresh of Ryzen 8000G series – meaning up to 8 Zen 4 cores, Radeon 780M graphics, 65W TDP, and likely a small increase in clock speeds. These chips also feature 16 TOPS with the NPU onboard, so we likely will see the same in the refresh, although that wouldn’t qualify the PCs involved for Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC standard.

Information relating to the Ryzen 9000G has been non-existent at this point, and no motherboard makers have made any mentions of such, which is rather rare in an industry where leaks are almost a tradition of sorts. If the leak is indeed correct, it’ll make the upcoming lineup the first ever in G-series to be a refreshed generation with no changes made on the silicon level.

Pokdepinion: Seems like a pretty odd choice to consider a refresh at this point.
