LG Smart TVs are as secure as they are smart; snags Common Criteria International Security Certification
LG’s webOS 3.5 smart TV platform has just earned a Common Criteria certification for its enhanced Application Security Solution Version 1.0 software. With yet another security certification under their belt, the Korean company continues to boast among the strongest smart TV security in the market. With consumers increasingly concerned about their privacy, it is a great move from LG.
Security Manager, the webOS 3.5 security software module, was tested in accordance with Common Criteria’s rigid benchmarks. CC’s internationally- recognized ISO/IEC 15408 standards are used by governments, banks, and other organizations to assess the security capabilities of individual products including 27 member countries from around the world including Australia, France, Japan, Korea and the United States. The test examined three phases of smart TV security: application installation protection, application execution protection and application content protection with digital rights management (DRM) encryption.
LG webOS 3.5 provides excellent application installation protection and also blocks unauthorized apps from being installed via a rigorous digital signature verification process. Native apps are sandboxed to block access to sensitive system files and data, while web applications have specific APIs to prevent these web apps from unauthorized access into system files. Last but not least, the DRM license verification process is designed to decrypt the encrypted content in the RAM and to create a clean back up of the encrypted content in flash memory.
The certification by Common Criteria shows that LG is dedicated on enhancing data protection and ensuring customer privacy.
Pokdepinion: I don’t have a smart TV, but strong security is a must-have in this age where everything, and anyone, can be hacked.
