Is it really a surprise that the Nintendo Switch sold out somewhere in the world?

With the Wii U’s failure to push sales for Nintendo, the Japanese giant had to come up with something new. That something new is the Nintendo Switch, which launched worldwide on March 3rd 2017.

Many are skeptical on whether the Nintendo Switch could sell well but turns out, there was nothing to worry about. In the UK, the Nintendo Switch did pretty well.

Official retailers have reported to GamesIndustry that the Nintendo Switch sold out and has managed to sell over 80,000 units in the UK during its opening weekend. 80,000 doesn’t sound like much? Let’s put that number into perspective.

In late 2013 when the Nintendo Wii U was launched, it managed to sell about 40,000 units. That is half of what the Nintendo Switch did in the UK. It’s not as high as another Nintendo creation however, with the 3DS selling over 113,000 units at launch. While the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 did 150,000 and 250,000 units respectively, it doesn’t change the fact that the Nintendo Switch did pretty well.

How so? The Nintendo Switch sold out in most major retail outlets in UK after all. That clearly exceeded Nintendo’s expectations in the UK as there wasn’t enough units to meet the demand there. You might be thinking why Nintendo wouldn’t manufacture more units at the start but that’s quite simple.

Normally when a new console comes out, it’s usually more expensive to manufacture at first. As time goes by, the cost of making the hardware usually decreases and therefore, companies would either be able to profit more, or slash the price for customers to enjoy. Manufacturing too many units and not being able to sell would be devastating in a business sense. Nintendo was just being careful.

In case you’re all wondering, the Nintendo Switch is estimated to have sold over 2 million units worldwide so don’t worry, it’s not just doing well in one place. With the Nintendo Switch sold out in UK, Nintendo is expected to supply more units of their brand new console soon but no exact word on when.

Pokdepinion: Congratulations Nintendo for a stellar sales record for their brand new videogame console. With the Nintendo Switch sold out in the UK, I’m very confident that more units will be sold when more awesome games become available for the platform. I’m personally waiting for a new Smash Bros. game before getting one.
