OnePlus 5 benchmarked by DxOMark; Two is not always better than One
The OnePlus 5 has just been benchmarked by the leading authority in camera performance, DxOMark, and it managed to score a high 87, placing it on par with the Huawei P10 and above the iPhone 7. DxOMark praised its autofocusing speed, accurate exposure and wide dynamic range.
However it’s high score cannot be attributed to its dual camera system. In fact, all the devices that scored higher than the OnePlus 5 sport single cameras. The HTC U11 which is the top dog with a score of 90, features a lone 12MP camera, and so does every device ranked higher than the OnePlus 5. This can be explained by the fact that DxOMark did not test the Portrait mode as well as the “lossless” zoom features on the OnePlus 5. DxOMark just solely tested the primary 16MP “wide-angle” 24mm camera’s performance.
It is understandably difficult to compare zoom features when most other devices lack the feature, but here it really shows that having a dual camera setup will not help you get better images. More is not always better in the case of cameras. If it was, we would still be stuck with twin-lens reflex cameras.
Pokdepinion: The misconception that dual camera setups will always outperform single camera smartphones is really quite widespread. Have a look at NasiLemakTech’s commentary about the differences between the various dual camera systems around.
